Find out what laws apply to how you structure your child’s learning. There may, for example, be rules for how many days per month your child must learn. If you’re living abroad, contact the authorities in your home area, or in the area in which your child might continue their schooling on your return. This will limit the chances of their education being out of step with that of their peers.
One of the major problems with homeschooling is ensuring not only that your child maintains a healthy social life, but also that they can interact with other children in the learning environment. These skills are an essential foundation for their future interaction in the workplace and the wider social world. Many homeschoolers therefore regularly meet up with other homeschoolers for certain activities. Some subjects, such as foreign languages, are best taught in a group environment.
There are also broader considerations of structure: Will the child perform better with shorter holidays and therefore less-intense schooldays? Some children even learn year-round, meaning they can shorten their week to just four days.
These decisions are best made based on your child’s personality and in consultation with teachers and education officials.
The Benefits of Deriving Your Own Structure
Don’t let the considerations of structure distract you from one of the big advantages of homeschooling. The idea is not necessarily to replicate the learning environment they would have experienced in an actual school.
You can encourage talents, for music or art, for example, in your child by including an element of these activities into every day’s timetable. Some people have found that more academic subjects such as math are made easier for certain students if they’re taught in combination with a subject the child excels at. This and other unorthodox methods are unavailable in a standard school because they’re highly subjective and could end up disadvantaging many of the children in the class.
