The table lamp is one of the most ubiquitous pieces of furniture in the modern home. Bringing subtlety and directionality to a room’s lighting, the table lamp makes the ideal complement to wall- or ceiling-mounted lighting. Much of the choice between different table lamps depends on your taste and the décor of the target room. But the brightness of a lamp is the primary criterion in terms of functionality. A lamp that’s too dull is basically useless, so make sure the lamps you buy can run high-wattage light bulbs safely. If you want to be able to use the lamp in different rooms, you should check that the lampshade is detachable. Most table lamps have a standardized fitting for lampshades, so you should then be able to pick any design you like.
Consider the height of your table lamp carefully, and take measurements to be sure. If you’re planning to use the light for reading on the sofa, you’ll need it to shine light directly onto the book’s pages. If the lamp is too short, only the diffuse light passing through the shade will land on the page. On the other hand, if you’re looking for background light, you’re better off with a shorter lamp, as you don’t want the light from the bulb to shine into your eyes.
