It’s important when buying a digital camera to consider what type of memory card you’ll need. Most cameras come with a memory card already installed, but these are usually quite small, holding perhaps only a couple of hundred photos. Especially with cameras that have a high resolution, you need quite a large memory card if you want to hold any serious quantity of photos. This is particularly important if you’re going somewhere where you won’t be able to copy the photos onto a computer — when the card runs out, you’ll have to start deleting beloved snaps if you want to take any more photos.
Be careful to buy the memory card that matches your digital camera. Different manufacturers often favor different formats of memory card. Sony, in particular, has its own range of memory cards that won’t fit into digital cameras from other manufacturers. The most common type of memory card is the so-called SD card, and many modern laptop computers have a reader slot for such cards. If you don’t want to have to use an external memory-card reader, try to find a digital camera that uses a type of memory card that your computer can already read.
